74. المدثر

Number of verses: 56

بِسْمِ اللّهِ الرَّحْمـَنِ الرَّحِيم

يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُدَّثِّرُ﴿1﴾

1. Cloaked one,

قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ﴿2﴾

2. stand up, deliver your warning,

وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ﴿3﴾

3. proclaim the greatness of your Lord,

وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ﴿4﴾

4. cleanse your clothes,

وَالرُّجْزَ فَاهْجُرْ﴿5﴾

5. stay away from sins

وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ﴿6﴾

6. and do not think that by doing such deeds, you have done a great favor to God

وَلِرَبِّكَ فَاصْبِرْ﴿7﴾

7. Exercise patience to please your Lord

فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِي النَّاقُورِ﴿8﴾

8. When the trumpet is sounded,

فَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ﴿9﴾

9. it will be a hard day

عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍ﴿10﴾

10. and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy

ذَرْنِي وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيدًا﴿11﴾

11. Leave to Me the one, whom I have created all by Myself,

وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُ مَالًا مَّمْدُودًا﴿12﴾

12. and whom I have granted abundant wealth

وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًا﴿13﴾

13. and children living in his presence,

وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُ تَمْهِيدًا﴿14﴾

14. whose life I have made run smoothly

ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ﴿15﴾

15. and who still desires more

كَلَّا ۖ إِنَّهُ كَانَ لِآيَاتِنَا عَنِيدًا﴿16﴾

16. Never will he receive more. He has been hostile to Our revelations

سَأُرْهِقُهُ صَعُودًا﴿17﴾

17. We shall make him suffer the torment of hell without relief

إِنَّهُ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ﴿18﴾

18. He planned and plotted

فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ﴿19﴾

19. May he be condemned!

ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ﴿20﴾

20. What an evil plan he has made!

ثُمَّ نَظَرَ﴿21﴾

21. May he be condemned again for his schemes! He looked around,

ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ﴿22﴾

22. frowned and scowled,

ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَاسْتَكْبَرَ﴿23﴾

23. then turned back, and swelling-up with pride,

فَقَالَ إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا سِحْرٌ يُؤْثَرُ﴿24﴾

24. ) said, "This (the Quran) is nothing but magic, inherited from ancient magicians

إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا قَوْلُ الْبَشَرِ﴿25﴾

25. These are only words from a mere mortal"

سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ﴿26﴾

26. I shall make him suffer the torment of hell

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا سَقَرُ﴿27﴾

27. Would that you really knew what hell is!

لَا تُبْقِي وَلَا تَذَرُ﴿28﴾

28. It leaves and spares no one and nothing

لَوَّاحَةٌ لِّلْبَشَرِ﴿29﴾

29. It scorches people's skin

عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ﴿30﴾

30. and it has nineteen angelic keepers

وَمَا جَعَلْنَا أَصْحَابَ النَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَائِكَةً ۙ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةً لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ وَيَزْدَادَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِيمَانًا ۙ وَلَا يَرْتَابَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۙ وَلِيَقُولَ الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ وَالْكَافِرُونَ مَاذَا أَرَادَ اللَّهُ بِهَٰذَا مَثَلًا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ اللَّهُ مَن يَشَاءُ وَيَهْدِي مَن يَشَاءُ ۚ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَمَا هِيَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَىٰ لِلْبَشَرِ﴿31﴾

31. We have made only angels as the keepers of the fire (for they are the strongest in carrying out Our commands). Our informing (people) of the numbers of these angels is a trial for the disbelievers. It gives more certainty to the people of the Book and strengthens the faith of the believers. The people of the Book and the believers have no doubt about it. We have fixed the number to make the disbelievers and those whose hearts are sick say, "What does God mean by such a parable?" Thus, God guides and causes to go astray whomever He wants. No one knows about the army of your Lord except He Himself. This parable is a reminder for mankind

كَلَّا وَالْقَمَرِ﴿32﴾

32. By the moon,

وَاللَّيْلِ إِذْ أَدْبَرَ﴿33﴾

33. by the retreating night,

وَالصُّبْحِ إِذَا أَسْفَرَ﴿34﴾

34. by the brightening dawn,

إِنَّهَا لَإِحْدَى الْكُبَرِ﴿35﴾

35. hell is certainly the greatest calamity

نَذِيرًا لِّلْبَشَرِ﴿36﴾

36. It is a warning for mankind

لِمَن شَاءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ﴿37﴾

37. whether one steps forward to embrace the faith or one turns away from it

كُلُّ نَفْسٍ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ﴿38﴾

38. Every soul will be in captivity for its deeds

إِلَّا أَصْحَابَ الْيَمِينِ﴿39﴾

39. except the people of the right hand

فِي جَنَّاتٍ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ﴿40﴾

40. who will be in Paradise

عَنِ الْمُجْرِمِينَ﴿41﴾

41. and will ask of the criminals,

مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِي سَقَرَ﴿42﴾

42. "what led you into hell?"

قَالُوا لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ الْمُصَلِّينَ﴿43﴾

43. They will reply, "We did not pray,

وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ الْمِسْكِينَ﴿44﴾

44. nor did we feed the destitute

وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ الْخَائِضِينَ﴿45﴾

45. We indulged and persisted in useless disputes,

وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ الدِّينِ﴿46﴾

46. and rejected the Day of Judgment

حَتَّىٰ أَتَانَا الْيَقِينُ﴿47﴾

47. until death approached us"

فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمْ شَفَاعَةُ الشَّافِعِينَ﴿48﴾

48. The intercession of the intercessors will be of no benefit to them

فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ التَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ﴿49﴾

49. If such will be the Day of Judgment, what is the matter with them? Why do they run away from guidance,

كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌ مُّسْتَنفِرَةٌ﴿50﴾

50. like frightened donkeys

فَرَّتْ مِن قَسْوَرَةٍ﴿51﴾

51. running away from a lion?

بَلْ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُؤْتَىٰ صُحُفًا مُّنَشَّرَةً﴿52﴾

52. Is it that everyone of them wants to receive a heavenly book addressed to him personally?

كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ الْآخِرَةَ﴿53﴾

53. This will certainly never be the case! In fact, they are not afraid of the Day of Judgment

كَلَّا إِنَّهُ تَذْكِرَةٌ﴿54﴾

54. There is no doubt that the Quran is a guide

فَمَن شَاءَ ذَكَرَهُ﴿55﴾

55. Let anyone who seeks guidance do so

وَمَا يَذْكُرُونَ إِلَّا أَن يَشَاءَ اللَّهُ ۚ هُوَ أَهْلُ التَّقْوَىٰ وَأَهْلُ الْمَغْفِرَةِ﴿56﴾

56. No one will seek guidance unless God wills it. He alone is worthy of being feared and He is the Source of Forgiveness
